Game #2 Wrap-Up

Jaguars Team Parents

We played a hard fought game on Sunday.

I know the game didn’t go exactly how we were expecting it to, but I wanted everyone to know that I was very proud of our team, continuing to play hard, w/ pride, and keeping their good sportsmanship throughout the game

- Fantastic job to everybody

Game Result:

Jaguars -7

Eagles – 30

Team Highlights:

We were able to make a rushing TD and complete the subsequent QB pass to convert the extra point. Also, our defense (both squads) played great all game long, several times having to defend against a shortened field.

Game Summary

The tale of Sunday’s game was unfortunately our turnovers again. Our running game struggled to get really any positive yardage, and unfortunately too many times our passing attempts gave the ball right back to the Eagle’s offense (typically deep in our own territory)

What we can work on for this week’s game:

This week, I really want to open up our offensive strategy and add higher percentage pass completions and some more trickery to our plays. I’ve been doing some research on-line, and I’ve got a couple of new proposals for our offense:

Getting more separation & spreading the defense

Up to this point, our pass plays have been strictly “button-hook” type routes, where the receivers simply go out and then turn and come back to the QB. This week, I’d like to add in some slant routes, keeping our receivers moving in front of the defense and creating more space to make the catch. I also want to send the other receivers more to the sidelines as opposed to the center of the field. Hopefully this will spread out the defense, and open up better targets to throw to.

Coverage confusion

I also found from other coaches that using a “criss-crossing” type WR patterns has had some good success. The idea here is that the defensive man x man coverage gets confused and looses their WR as they cross each other’s patterns, hopefully opening up space for the WR's to make the catch.

Trickery

Lastly, I want to add a little more trickery into our playbook. In these 1st 2 games, we’ve played some very aggressive and ambitious defenses. By introducing a little more trickery, I think we can use this aggressive play against them.

Follow-up Items:

Pictures from our games

Parents, if you happen to get a good picture of your MVP during the game, be sure to send it to me. I can attach 1 picture to the game wrap-up news article and/or add up to 3 pictures (in addition to the team schedule) in the picture gallery section of our team home page (and I can update the picture gallery for each week’s game).

Normal Practice / Game times:

Just as a quick note, next week’s game (and all remaining games on the schedule) will be back to our usual practice start time of 2pm w/ a 3pm game start.

I think that’s it for now.

- Let me know if you have any questions / concerns.

Sincerely,

Greg Thomas
